How to advertise in lectures... step by step

a) Look up the courses home page on-line

http://www.vuw.ac.nz/home/catalogue/index.aspx

b) Target anything you think is suitable. Remember most areas have some interest in computing these days.

c)Determine current lecturer from step a)

d)Contact via e-mail/phone lecturer and ask for 5 mins at the start of lectures, and which day and time is best for them. (can also do ends but start generally works out better In my experience)

e)Show up to lecture 5-10 mins beforehand... scope out the theatre, if you are lucky it has a projector and networked terminal... in this case goto the interface wiki and bring up the pdf file for the installfest... go full screen (I think it's ctl+L in windows viewer)

I have prepared a 2 page PDF page 1 is the standard current installfest poster, page 2 is a little blurb about interface and what we do. (People should review this in case I have said something we don't want to say... But everything there is available on the Wiki and not too controversial)

here: http://user.interface.org.nz/~aenertia/installfest_200601/info_slides.odt http://user.interface.org.nz/~aenertia/installfest_200601/info_slides.pdf

f) As a backup plan, have the slides on OHT transparencies.

g) Also prepare flyers (8 to 1 page of the installfest flyer and cut up looks and works best), place these at the front of the lecture theatre or get the class to pass them along. Make sure you mention the flyers in your speil.

h) Do you spiel basically talk through the slides, Speak LOUD, ask if there are any questions and answer as best you can.

i) Thank the lecturer (do it at the end of your speil to save time, they will appreciate it.

j) Go on your merry way (unless you are in the class that is) knowing that you have done your bit for advocacy for today.

k) Post to organisation what class you have done. (you can also do this before hand... but it's better to do it after as you might get delayed etc)

==== How to advertise in MCS lectures ===

  1. Contact the lecturer at least a day beforehand, to ask if it's okay. If they're using powerpoint, you could give them a slide to insert. If they're using transparencies, make one.
  2. Turn up five minutes before the lecture starts. Approach lecturer. Having you on *after* the lecture has begun (even if just the lecturer getting people's attention) works best.
  3. When it's time: Be enthusiastic! Tell people what Interface is, and why they should care! Tell them about the event, if any!
  4. Thank the lecturer.
  5. Run away cackling wildly.
